The Member of Parliament for Wa West, Mr. Peter Lanchene Toobu, has urged Ghanaians to recognise the serious security implications of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, stressing that the practice threatens the nation’s stability and future.

Speaking on the Oman Ghana Nkosuo show hosted by Obaa Yaa Titi on Accra-based CTV, Mr Toobu lamented that the galamsey menace, which has persisted for nearly eight years, continues to endanger Ghana’s environment, economy, and social cohesion.

While acknowledging the contribution of gold to national revenue, the MP cautioned that economic gain should not come at the cost of environmental destruction.

“We cannot continue to destroy our railways, cocoa farms, and water bodies in the name of mining,” he emphasised.

Mr. Toobu proposed that the government prioritise the training and formalisation of small-scale miners to promote sustainable and responsible mining practices.

He explained that many small-scale miners use destructive methods due to a lack of proper guidance and technical knowledge.

He pointed to medium and large-scale mining companies, such as Ashanti Gold, as examples of entities that adhere to responsible mining standards and environmental regulations.

The Wa West legislator also commended NAiMOS for its ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, urging the institution to remain steadfast in fulfilling its mandate.

He noted that NAiMOS was established on the foundation of previous mining oversight agencies and must therefore not fail.

Mr Toobu further called for stronger policy frameworks to ensure that all mining operations are conducted responsibly and transparently.

“If mining must be done, it should be done right,” he asserted, warning that “in the next five years, our water bodies will speak for the current government.”

He concluded by urging Ghanaians to unite in the fight against galamsey, describing it as a national duty that demands the collective effort of all citizens.
