The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has failed to elect a Presiding Member(PM) after neither of the two candidates secured the constitutionally required two-thirds majority.

The election, held during a sitting of the 66-member Assembly, went through two rounds of voting but ended without a decisive outcome.

A total of 59 members were present and cast their ballots.

The contest was between the incumbent Presiding Member and Assembly Member for Krofrom East, Patrick Kwame Frimpong, and the Assembly Member for Fante Newtown, Ernest Baffour Ofori.

In the first round, Mr. Kwame Frimpong secured 35 votes, while Mr. Baffour Ofori obtained 24 votes.

In the second round, Mr. Kwame Frimpong increased his tally to 36 votes, with Mr. Baffour Ofori polling 23 votes.

However, neither candidate reached the required two-thirds majority of the full membership of the Assembly.

Announcing the results, the Ashanti Regional Electoral Director of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Dinah Osei Asibey, stated that the Assembly is required by law to reconvene within 10 days to conduct another election.

The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, expressed optimism that members would reach a consensus at the next sitting and successfully elect a Presiding Member to steer the Assembly’s proceedings.
