Kpandai poll annulled: Parliament gives EC green light for new election
The Parliamentary Service has officially informed the Electoral Commission (EC) of a vacant parliamentary seat in the Kpandai Constituency, paving the way for a court-ordered rerun of the 2024 parliamentary election in the area.
The notice, dated December 4, 2025, initiates the administrative process required for the EC to organise a fresh poll to select a new Member of Parliament for Kpandai.
The correspondence, addressed to EC Chairperson Mrs Jean Mensa and signed by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, was issued in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the clerk to alert the commission whenever a parliamentary seat becomes vacant.
The letter indicated that the vacancy follows an order from the High Court in Tamale on November 24, 2025, directing that the Kpandai parliamentary contest be conducted again due to significant electoral irregularities identified during the legal challenge.
Under Article 112(5), the EC must conduct a new election within 90 days of such a notice, unless the vacancy occurs within the final three months before Parliament dissolves. Based on the December 4 notification, the rerun must take place no later than early March 2026.
Kpandai, situated in the Northern Region, has become a focal point of legal and political attention due to the disputed 2024 results. The upcoming rerun is expected to attract keen national interest, as the outcome could influence the overall balance of power in Parliament.
The EC is now expected to issue a detailed timetable for the rerun—including nomination periods and the official polling date in the coming weeks, giving constituents a renewed opportunity to choose their representative.
