Bawumia support rising ahead of Jan. 31 primary

A rapidly expanding wave of endorsements from across Ghana is significantly boosting the presidential primary ambitions of former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the party prepares for its January 31, 2026, internal elections.

From northern communities to coastal towns and key urban centres, expressions of support for Dr. Bawumia have intensified in recent weeks.

Party insiders now describe his campaign as enjoying a level of grassroots momentum rarely seen so early in a primary contest.

Backing for Dr. Bawumia is coming from a wide cross-section of the party — including electoral area coordinators, constituency executives, former Members of Parliament, youth organisers, and even former supporters of rival candidates. Many of these individuals believe his national appeal, political experience, and forward-looking policy ideas give him a decisive advantage as the NPP prepares for the 2028 general elections.

Supporters point to his consistent presence on the political scene since 2008, alongside his role in championing digital transformation and economic modernisation, as reasons he is best positioned to lead the party forward.

According to party officials, endorsements are coming both from the grassroots base and from senior political strategists — a rare alignment within internal party politics.

In several constituencies, endorsement figures reveal a strong consensus in Dr. Bawumia’s favour.

In the Prestea Huni Valley constituency, 28 out of 32 electoral area coordinators — representing 87.5% — have publicly supported his candidacy.

New Juaben South followed closely, with 30 out of 34 coordinators, or 88.2%, declaring their allegiance.

Akuapem North has recorded one of the highest endorsement rates so far, with 29 out of 31 coordinators (93.5%) openly supporting the former Vice President.

In the Assin South constituency, coordinators are reported to be united behind his bid, although an exact percentage was not provided.

Meanwhile, in Mfantseman, 34 of the 36 coordinators — amounting to 94.4% — have endorsed him, making it one of the most resounding displays of support documented to date.

These coordinators, who play a critical role in mobilising polling station executives, explained that the growing unity around Dr. Bawumia signals a strong desire within the party for a candidate capable of energising the base while appealing to undecided voters nationwide.

Many of them describe him as the only aspirant with the public recognition, political stature, and cross-regional support needed to secure victory in 2028.

Beyond grassroots organisers, a significant number of former party executives have also lined up behind the former Vice President.

In Mfantseman alone, 37 out of 47 former constituency executives have pledged their support after assessing what they believe is the party’s best strategic option for the future.

The youth wing is showing similar enthusiasm. In the Central Region, 30 of 47 former youth organisers have thrown their weight behind his campaign, promising to mobilise young voters and galvanise support at the grassroots level.

Current constituency executives have also joined the chorus of endorsements.

In Mpohor, Chairman Razak Dadzie publicly committed to delivering 80% of total delegate votes for Dr. Bawumia, cautioning members not to “repeat the mistake” of rejecting the party’s most recognisable and marketable candidate.

In Nkwanta South, First Vice-Chairperson Pius Amewu announced that he is confident of securing up to 90% support for Dr. Bawumia, stating that he remains the strongest figure to return the NPP to power following the 2024 elections.

Agona East’s 2024 parliamentary candidate, Hannah Asamoah, also urged party members to remain consistent in their political choices.

She compared the process to business development, arguing that stability is essential for growth, and the party should not keep changing its “product” at a critical time.

Senior party figures in Akan and Asikuma Odoben Brakwa have likewise praised Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and officially thrown their support behind him.

One of the most notable developments in recent weeks has been the defection of key individuals who were previously aligned with opposing camps.

In Asunafo South, Deputy Constituency Secretary Eric Agyemang, a former organiser for Kennedy Agyapong’s camp, announced his switch to Team Bawumia.

He openly withdrew statements he had previously made against the former Vice President, admitting that some of the allegations were “falsehoods and misinformation.”

Another significant endorsement came from former Kade MP, Ofosu Asamoah, who previously served as campaign manager for Kwabena Agyapong.

He said his decision followed a careful evaluation of the NPP’s internal dynamics and the type of leadership needed to remain competitive in future elections.

Other prominent names who have publicly endorsed Dr. Bawumia include Michael Okyere Baafi, the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South; former Akwatia MP, Mercy Adu-Gyamfi (popularly known as Ama Sey); as well as long-standing party strategists and former constituency officials from various regions.

Their combined influence within party structures is widely seen as adding further weight to Dr. Bawumia’s campaign.

While the endorsements are coming from different parts of the country and various political backgrounds, the reasoning behind them remains largely the same.

Many supporters argue that Dr. Bawumia stands the best chance of winning the 2028 general elections due to his nationwide recognition and the significant investment the party has made in building his political brand over the years.

Others point to his policy vision — particularly in digitalisation, economic reform, and technological advancement — as evidence of his readiness to lead the next phase of the NPP’s political journey.

His advocacy for stronger welfare structures within the party has also earned him praise from organisers who believe he genuinely understands the needs of party members on the ground.

With endorsement figures exceeding 80% in several constituencies and more high-profile figures switching to his camp, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia appears to be entering the final phase of the campaign as the clear front-runner.

As the January 31, 2026, NPP presidential primaries draw closer, attention is now shifting from whether he will secure victory to how wide his margin of success will be as he seeks the mandate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
