Kumasi:Market Queen-Mothers outraged over Bawumia’s Snub
The Queen- Mothers of Kumasi's central markets, including Kejetia, Race Course, Suame, and Bantama markets in the Ashanti Region have expressed deep dismay and disappointment at the Vice President's failure to attend a scheduled meeting on June 10, 2024.
The meeting, intended to address concerns and strengthen ties between traditional authorities and the government, was snubbed by the Vice President, causing outrage among the Queen Mothers and their subjects.
The queen mothers were informed of Dr Mahamadu Bawumia’s meeting with them by the Ashanti Regional Women’s Organizer, Abena Ampomah.
The Traditional Authorities of these markets were prepared to welcome the Vice President, having confirmed the meeting and waited for several hours only for Dr Bawumia not to show up, Kwame Nkrumah, Director of Operations for the Queen-Mothers told the duo host of Ghana Yensom morning show, Otafrigya Kaayire Kwesi Appea-Apreku and Odeeyheeba Kofi Essuman on Accra 100.5 FM.
He said despite their efforts and anticipation, the Vice President did not show up, nor did he provide any formal communication explaining his absence.
The Queen -Mothers and traders had gathered from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, leaving their businesses amidst severe economic hardships, only to be informed unofficially that the Vice President would not attend.
This incident has been perceived as a blatant disregard and disrespect towards the traditional institutions that form the core of the region's cultural heritage.
The Queen- Mothers, who hold esteemed positions within their communities, felt particularly insulted by this oversight.
Nana Wiafe, Vice Chairman of the Kumasi Queen Mothers, expressed the collective sentiment: “This is a grave affront to our traditional leadership and a slap in the face to the good people of the Ashanti Region.
We demand an explanation and an apology for this unacceptable behaviour.”
He emphasized the importance of respecting traditional authorities, especially given their critical role in maintaining cultural integrity and supporting local communities
