President John Dramani Mahama says he has received investigative reports on incidents that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 general elections, and has handed them over to the Attorney-General for further action.

According to him, the reports will serve as a basis for ensuring accountability and compensation for victims, including journalists who suffered attacks during the electoral periods.

The former President made this known when executives and council members of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) paid a courtesy call on him.

Mr. Mahama also announced plans to revive the Media Development Fund in next year’s budget.

He explained that the fund would be managed transparently through a joint Government-GJA–GJA board, to support the work of journalists and strengthen press freedom.

Expressing concern over Ghana’s decline in international press freedom rankings, Mr. Mahama cited the harassment of journalists, including the killing of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, and the frequent mistreatment of reporters by security agencies.

He called for structured dialogue between the GJA and security institutions to protect journalists in the line of duty.

For his part, GJA President Albert Dwumfour invited the former President to attend this year’s GJA Awards, which will be hosted in Kumasi for the first time.

The event is scheduled for either late October or the first week of November, depending on Mr. Mahama’s availability.
