Majority apologises to Ken Ofori-Atta for military men invading his home
The Majority National Democratic Congress (NDC) side in Parliament has rendered an apology to former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta.
This comes after Ofori-Atta’s home in Cantonments was raided by about 12 men in military and police uniforms, and plain clothing, Tuesday, February 11, 2025. The incident took place while Ofori-Atta was out of the country seeking medical care. His wife and other family members encountered the intruders.
On Thursday, February 13, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga noted the event as lamentable and unfortunate.
He added necessary steps had been taken to ensure such a thing never happened again.
According to Ayariga, investigations had shown the raid was led by Richard Jakpa, an official at the National Security Coordinator’s office.
The Majority Leader decried the operation, highlighting it ran contrary to President John Mahama and his government’s values.
"H.E. President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to ensuring that the rights and liberties of every individual are respected. We have received assurances from the office of the National Security Coordinator that the incident was not intended to happen," Ayariga said.
"That occurrence is most regrettable and unfortunate, and he [Jakpa] wants to give this House his words and assurances that a thing like that should never happen again," he emphasised.
Mahama Ayariga said, "I personally extend my apologies to the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and I believe the issue should suffice."
A day after the raid, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) denied any involvement in the operation, calling it staged.
Thereafter, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng declared Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive, by virtue of being a suspect in some high-profile corruption investigations.
"Consequently, the OSP declares Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta a wanted person. He is a fugitive from the law," Agyebeng declared at a press conference.
