The Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has challenged the legal basis of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG)’s demand for the removal of the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, Samuel Adom Botchway.

Addressing a news conference today, the Minister dismissed CLOGSAG’s call, stating that Mr. Botchway’s appointment does not violate the Civil Service Act.

His comments come in response to CLOGSAG’s threat of nationwide industrial action on Thursday, February 20, 2025, should the government fail to remove the Registrar. Mr. Kwakye Ofosu, however, made it clear that Mr. Botchway will remain in office.

Response to Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on Press Freedom

The Minister also addressed concerns raised by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) over alleged attacks on journalists.

He rejected claims that these incidents were orchestrated by the government, stating that President Mahama cannot be blamed for actions beyond his control.

However, he assured that the government is engaging with the GJA to address their concerns, reaffirming President Mahama’s commitment to press freedom.

Rebuttal to Former Finance Minister’s Claims

In addition, Felix Kwakye Ofosu responded to former Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adams, who suggested that the previous administration deserved credit for the government's ability to pay the fourth Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) coupons to bondholders.

The Minister dismissed these claims outright, stating that the current government, led by President Mahama, is fully responsible for ensuring the payments and not the previous administration.
