NDC Legal Director alleges plot by pro-Bawumia Minority MPs to sideline Minority Leader
The Director of Legal Affairs of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Godwin Eduzi Tameklo, has accused some Minority Members of Parliament who support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of scheming to have the Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, removed from his position.
According to Mr. Tameklo, the group of Minority MPs backing Dr. Bawumia allegedly operates a separate WhatsApp platform that excludes the Minority Leader.
He claimed that the MPs used the platform to plan a visit to Dr. Bawumia without informing Hon. Afenyo-Markin, forcing the Minority Leader to rush to the meeting after learning about it.
Speaking on the matter, Mr. Tameklo suggested that the actions of the MPs were part of a broader attempt to undermine the Minority Leader, adding that there were indications that “time is up” for Hon. Afenyo-Markin.
However, he argued that Dr. Bawumia would not heed calls from what he described as “hawks” around him to remove the Minority Leader, warning that such a move would amount to political suicide.
Mr. Tameklo further claimed that although Dr. Bawumia may not fully trust Hon. Afenyo-Markin, he is unlikely to remove him, as doing so would send the wrong signal to the public.
He said Dr. Bawumia would want to demonstrate that he is different from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, whom he accused of purging party members he did not trust.
He also alleged that Hon. Afenyo-Markin was a late political appointment by President Akufo-Addo, a move that reportedly caused dissatisfaction among some senior party figures, including former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and former MP Joe Wise, both of whom are now principal advisers to Dr. Bawumia.
