The Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Tamekloe, has criticised the handlers of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, accusing them of shielding him from media engagement during his time in office.

In a Facebook post, Mr Tamekloe argued that the failure of the former President’s team to encourage regular interactions with the press was a “great disservice” to both his administration and the public.

“It was a dent on the handlers for not getting the former President to engage the media, or?” he questioned, suggesting that Akufo-Addo’s leadership could have benefited from more openness and accountability through such forums.

His remarks followed the recent media engagement by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s successor at the Jubilee House, which sparked renewed debate about transparency and communication between the presidency and the public.

President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that his administration remains firmly committed to democratic governance, despite his party’s overwhelming majority in Parliament.

Speaking at a media engagement, the President dismissed suggestions that he intends to exploit the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) dominance in the Legislature to entrench himself in power or seek an additional term.

“The mandate given to me by the people of Ghana is to carry out reforms that will strengthen governance and improve the lives of citizens, not to establish a dictatorship,” President Mahama stated.

His remarks came in response to a journalist’s question about whether the NDC’s parliamentary majority could be used to undermine democratic institutions.

He emphasised that his government’s agenda is reform-driven and people-centred, not authoritarian.

President Mahama explained that the NDC’s strong numbers in Parliament will instead be used to advance constitutional amendments and legislative reforms aimed at deepening democracy and securing Ghana’s future.

“Our majority in Parliament is not a tool for abuse of power but an opportunity to deliver on the aspirations of Ghanaians,” he affirmed.
