Calls grow within NDC for Oppong-Fosu to lead party into 2028 elections

As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) looks toward the 2028 general elections, internal debates are intensifying over who is best positioned to sustain President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda.
While no official candidates have yet declared, some party faithful are rallying behind Mr Akwasi Oppong-Fosu, the current Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), as a unifying figure with the experience and vision to lead the party to victory.
Thomas Dindiego, a former NDC Constituency Communications Officer for Amenfi East, has publicly endorsed Oppong-Fosu, citing his decades of governance and policy expertise.
“The NDC must select a leader who can bridge intra-party divides and appeal across generations.
Oppong-Fosu is that leader,” Dindiego said, stressing that factionalism remains one of the greatest challenges to party unity.
With more than 40 years of public service, Oppong-Fosu has worked under three presidents—Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, and John Dramani Mahama.
His ministerial appointments include Local Government and Rural Development, Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, and Minister of State at the Presidency (Development Authorities).
He also served as Head of the Local Government Service.
Dindiego describes him as “fair but firm, principled yet approachable”, noting that he commands respect across political lines.
“In the 21st century, leadership requires competence, depth, and experience.
Oppong-Fosu has all three, plus international exposure,” he added.
On the global stage, Oppong-Fosu has held leadership positions such as President of the United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG-Africa, Rabat), Vice President of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG, Barcelona), Chairman of the Africa-Caribbean-Pacific Local Government Platform (Brussels), and Member of the UN Advisory Committee on Local Authorities.
He also sits on the Advisory Board of the African Business Chamber.
Domestically, he founded and chairs the Africa Global Emergence Centre (AGEC), a policy think tank championing Africa’s role in global affairs, and presides over Africa Growth Solutions, an investment and economic cooperation platform.
Supporters argue that this blend of domestic and international experience uniquely positions Oppong-Fosu to consolidate Mahama’s gains, sustain the Reset Agenda, and embody continuity with the NDC’s founding principles.
Importantly, they say, he appeals to both veteran members and the younger generation of party supporters.
Dindiego warned the NDC against making “risky leadership choices,” urging delegates to prioritise unity, inspiration, and the ability to advance Mahama’s transformation vision.
“He bridges generational divides, which is essential for sustaining the Reset Agenda,” he emphasised.
As the NDC prepares for its post-Mahama future, discussions around Oppong-Fosu’s potential candidacy highlight a broader party focus: cohesion, continuity, and long-term electoral success.
