NPP 2026 primaries: Louisa Iris Arde explains moving from Bawumia to Bryan Acheampong
Louisa Iris Arde, the former MCE for Jomoro, has announced she has moved from the camp of former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia to support former Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gears up for its primaries.
Ghana returns to the polls in 2028, but the main opposition NPP will choose a flagbearer two years earlier in January 2026.
"With deep conviction, and after careful consideration, I announce my decision to defect from Dr. Bawumia's Campaign Team and to join Dr. Bryan's Acheampong Campaign," a statement by Ms Iris Arde said.
She listed what distinguishes Dr Acheampong, making him better to lead the NPP than Dr Bawumia.
"I came to this conclusion out of deep love for a party that gave me the opportunity to serve my people as Municipal Chief Executive for Jomoro. I find in Dr Acheampong youthful dynamism, decisive and disciplined leadership that can deliver victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections," she said.
She said Dr Acheampong's "decent campaign, his message of unity, and his strategic candidature as someone who can easily connect with and ignite the NPP base led me to this important conclusion".
Ms Iris Arde pledged her "total commitment" to Dr Acheampong and his team's restoration project.
"And to His Excellency, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, whom I used to coordinate for, I still hold him in high esteem. I, however, believe that Dr. Bryan Acheampong is the one who can deliver the goods for the NPP," she doubled down.
She urged all NPP members, executives, and sympathisers to rally around Dr Bryan Acheampong, whom she described as "the candidate of the present and the future".
