NPP-UP tradition holds best records on single-digit inflation – Dr Kojo Opoku

The Founding President of the UP Tradition Institute, Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, has challenged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) over its recent celebration of a 9.4% single-digit inflation rate recorded in September 2025.
According to him, while the achievement is noteworthy for President John Dramani Mahama’s government, historical data shows that the UP Tradition/New Patriotic Party (NPP) governments hold the strongest record when it comes to achieving and sustaining single-digit inflation in Ghana.
Dr. Opoku cited figures dating back to the Busia administration, which recorded an inflation rate as low as 3.03% in 1970, describing it as the best performance in Ghana’s economic history.
He further highlighted the achievements of the Kufuor and Akufo-Addo administrations, noting that between 2018 and 2021, Ghana consistently maintained single-digit inflation under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
By comparison, he argued, the NDC’s record is weaker.
Under Rawlings, the lowest inflation rate achieved was 4.87% in 1999, while the Mills administration recorded 8.73% in 2011.
He stressed that during President Mahama’s first term (2013–2016), Ghana never experienced single-digit inflation, with the best figure recorded being 11.67% in 2013.
“This 9.4% single-digit inflation is the first time Mahama’s government has achieved such a target in both his first and second terms.
It is commendable, but it cannot be compared to the consistency of the UP Tradition governments,” Dr. Opoku said.
He concluded that unless the Mahama administration sustains single-digit inflation over his four-year mandate, similar to the Akufo-Addo government’s 2018–2021 record, the NDC cannot claim superiority in economic management.
“Until the NDC achieves a better record than Busia’s 3.03%, the NPP/UP Tradition remains the custodian of the best single-digit inflation performance in Ghana’s history,” Dr. Opoku emphasised.
