NPP accuses gov't of politicising national tragedy

The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of dragging the recent helicopter crash tragedy into partisan politics.
The incident, which claimed the lives of eight people, has thrown the nation into mourning.
Mr. Boakye said the period should have been devoted entirely to unity, healing, and honouring the fallen, but alleged that the government’s actions have instead inflamed political tensions.
He cited the arrest of Wontumi TV presenter, Akyemkwa Nana Kofi Asare, in Ejisu Krapa—reportedly in a “Rambo-style” operation by unidentified armed men—as well as the arrest of social media personality Fante Comedy over a viral TikTok video, as examples of what he called a politically motivated response.
According to Mr. Boakye, these actions at a sensitive time “send a chilling signal that politics is being placed above compassion and national solidarity,” adding that such developments risk diverting attention from mourning the victims to partisan disputes.
He further warned that the timing and manner of the arrests could raise public concerns about safety, freedom of expression, and the rule of law under the Mahama-led administration.
“Leadership in times of tragedy requires restraint, empathy, and the protection of democratic freedoms,” he said.
Mr. Boakye urged the government to allow the nation to mourn without intimidation, calling for “genuine mourning” and an end to what he described as the politicisation of the tragedy.
