NPP's road contracts were substandard-Deputy Minister

Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini, has raised serious concerns over the quality and intent of several road contracts awarded under the previous Akufo-Addo administration, describing many of them as poorly conceived and technically deficient.
The Tamale North MP stated that Ghana is currently facing the consequences of these contracts, with numerous roads either incomplete or already showing signs of deterioration.
“Some of these contracts were simply not fit for purpose. They were politically motivated and rushed through without adequate consideration for long-term durability or cost-effectiveness,” he said.
According to Mr. Suhuyini, a number of the projects lacked comprehensive technical evaluations.
This led to flawed designs that did not align with the specific terrain or usage demands of the proposed roads.
The Deputy Minister revealed that the current administration has initiated a systematic review of existing contracts, aimed at ensuring value for money and compliance with acceptable engineering and construction standards.
“We have found instances where contracts were signed for roads in areas without even proper drainage plans.
In some cases, the contract sums were inflated, and the designs failed to reflect the real needs on the ground,” he disclosed.
As a result of this review process, several projects have been either suspended or redesigned to correct technical and financial inefficiencies inherited from the previous regime.
Mr. Suhuyini reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring integrity to public infrastructure development, stressing that safeguarding public funds and delivering quality roads remain top priorities.
“It is our duty to fix this broken system and ensure that the Ghanaian taxpayer is not short-changed,” he concluded.
He made these remarks during his appearance on Accra-based Metro TV on Friday,
