NPP sets up disability secretariat
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has inaugurated its first-ever secretariat dedicated to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), marking a significant milestone since the party's inception in 1992.
Facilitated, coordinated, and resourced by the International Republican Institute (IRI), the establishment of the secretariat underscores the NPP's commitment to inclusivity and empowerment of marginalized groups within its ranks.
In a statement, Mr. Stephen Ayesu Ntim, the National Chairman of the NPP, expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for his unwavering support towards the creation of the PWDs national secretariat.
He also commended Madam Rita Talata Asobayire, the Second National Vice Chairperson, and her committee, as well as the beneficiary PWDs, for their advocacy and participation in the initiative.
"As national chairman, I pledge to work closely with the secretariat, providing resources and support to realize its objectives," stated Mr. Ntim. He further announced plans to appoint national coordinators to oversee the secretariat's operations, ensuring alignment with the party's structure and values.
Highlighting the importance of inclusivity, Mr. Ntim emphasized that the establishment of the PWDs secretariat strengthens the NPP's commitment to its inclusive development.
He expressed confidence that the secretariat would empower and amplify the voices of all members, especially Persons living With Disabilities.
The groundwork for the secretariat was laid during a one-day workshop on the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in the NPP, held on December 21, 2023, at the AH Hotel and Conference in Accra.
Organized in partnership with the IRI, the workshop brought together key stakeholders, including party officials, government representatives, and members of disability advocacy organizations.
With funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the IRI is implementing a four-year Political Accountability Activity (POLA) in Ghana, supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing democratic governance and inclusion
