Following a recent report of a meeting in Kumasi between former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, and a group of lawyers, where he announced his intention to contest again for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position, some party supporters have expressed concern over his remarks and approach.

Reports indicate that Agyapong claimed that the NPP’s former flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, was rejected by Ghanaians due to his Muslim faith and minority tribal background.

These comments have sparked outrage among party supporters, many of whom have taken to social media to express their disappointment and anger. 

Some have criticised Mr Agyapong for making divisive remarks that could weaken the party’s unity, particularly at a time when the NPP is focused on reorganisation ahead of the 2028 elections.

Others have pointed out that he took a similar approach during the NPP’s 2023 flagbearer contest. 

However, party supporters have warned that they will not tolerate such behaviour this time and have urged all members to prioritise the party’s collective interests over personal ambitions.
