Miltary personnel on drill exercise

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process, clarifying that no military personnel will be stationed at polling stations during the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

In a statement issued on December 1, GAF emphasized that its role will be limited to providing standby support upon a formal request from the Ghana Police Service (GPS), which holds the primary responsibility for election security.

"As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining national security and peace during this critical democratic exercise, GAF wishes to reiterate that no military personnel will be stationed at any polling station," the statement read.

"The military will only be deployed upon request by the Ghana Police Service to handle specific situations requiring additional reinforcements."

To prevent impersonation or unauthorized activities by individuals posing as military personnel, GAF has urged citizens to remain vigilant.

The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity, such as individuals claiming to be GAF personnel or wearing military-patterned attire at polling stations, to the nearest police station or by calling the toll-free numbers 18555 or 0800 311 311.

"This will ensure that appropriate action is taken against such individuals or groups to maintain security and protect the integrity of the election process," the statement added.

GAF also reiterated its dedication to safeguarding Ghana's stability and sovereignty, particularly during the elections.

The statement called on all Ghanaians to exercise their civic rights responsibly, cooperate with security personnel, and refrain from acts that could disrupt the peace.

"GAF remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the stability and sovereignty of the nation while ensuring the integrity of the election process," it concluded.
