Parliament approves Appointments Committee composition
Ghana’s Parliament has approved the composition of its Appointments Committee, tasked with vetting and recommending nominees for ministerial and other high-level appointments.
The committee will be chaired by First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor, with Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah serving as Vice Chairperson.
Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has been named as the Ranking Member, while Patricia Appiagyei takes the role of Deputy Ranking Member.
The Appointments Committee holds the critical responsibility of scrutinizing individuals nominated by the President for key positions, including Ministers of State, Deputy Ministers, and other roles as mandated by the Constitution or relevant legislation.
During the parliamentary session on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Majority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson presented the report on the committee's composition.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring proportional representation based on the ratio of 183 Majority members to 88 Minority members in Parliament.
“The committee respectfully recommends to the House to adopt this report and approve the membership of the Appointments and Business Committee as composed, as well as the recomposition of the Committees of Selection,” Dr. Forson stated.
The approval of the Appointments Committee paves the way for the vetting of President John Mahama’s nominees for various government positions in the coming weeks.
