President Mahama revokes MMDCEs and Assembly Members' appointments nationwide
In a sweeping move to reorganize local governance, President John Dramani Mahama has revoked the appointments of all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), as well as appointed Assembly Members across the country.
The decision, one of President Mahama’s first actions after being sworn in as Ghana’s 6th President on January 7, 2025, takes immediate effect.
In a letter signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President, the directive was communicated to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development.
The revocation is in accordance with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940).
The directive tasks Coordinating Directors of the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to assume acting roles as chief executives until new appointments are announced.
This decision is seen as a critical step toward achieving the government’s vision for decentralization and effective local governance.
By creating room for new leadership at the local level, the administration aims to realign its structures with its broader developmental agenda.
