President Mahama strengthens ties with Niger in continued West Africa diplomatic tour

As part of Ghana’s commitment to regional diplomacy and cooperation, President John Dramani Mahama continued his West African tour, reinforcing Ghana’s long-standing foreign policy of good neighbourliness.
On Sunday, March 9, 2025, he arrived in Niamey, Niger, where he engaged in high-level discussions with General Abdourahamane Tchiani, President of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland.
Key Discussions
The leaders held closed-door talks, followed by an expanded bilateral meeting with their respective delegations at the Presidential Palace.
A communiqué issued after the engagements highlighted:
✔️ Security Cooperation – Strengthening regional efforts to combat terrorism in the Sahel and West Africa.
✔️ Trade & Economic Relations – Ensuring smooth and unrestricted trade between Ghana and Niger.
✔️ Bilateral Ties – Enhancing collaboration in key sectors, including agriculture and commerce.
Alliance of Sahel States & ECOWAS Relations
President Tchiani emphasized the need for ECOWAS to recognize and collaborate with the Alliance of Sahel States (ASS). In response, President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to regional stability, stressing the urgency of greater cooperation to counter-terrorism, which threatens not only the Sahel but also coastal West African nations.
Ghana-Niger Partnership
President Mahama also expressed his gratitude to President Tchiani for sending a delegation to his inauguration on January 7, 2025. He noted that Ghana and Niger share a long history of trade and cooperation, particularly in agriculture, as Ghana imports a significant amount of Nigerien agricultural products.
Strengthening Regional Unity
President Mahama’s visit underscores Ghana’s active role in fostering regional peace, security, and economic integration. His tour of West African states is part of a broader effort to solidify diplomatic relations and address pressing security concerns.
