SoNA 2024: Mahama's presence sparks minority caucus frenzy in parliament
The atmosphere in parliament became charged on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, during President Nana Akufo-Addo's delivery of his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) when Speaker Alban Bagbin announced the presence of former President John Dramani Mahama.
The announcement triggered frenzied reactions from Minority Members of Parliament.
The Minority MPs, upon hearing about John Mahama's presence, erupted into singing and drumming on their official desks, causing a temporary halt in the proceedings.
Their chants, 'Wo ye ye Mahama be ba,' which translates to 'You cannot stop Mahama's second coming,' echoed through the chamber.
The fervour displayed by the Minority MPs led to a delay in the already-delayed SONA.
Speaker Bagbin, attempting to restore order, rose to his feet, reminding the Minority MPs of the parliamentary rules.
Despite the Speaker's attempts to bring calm, the Minority MPs persisted in their exuberance.
Speaker Bagbin reiterated the importance of maintaining decorum during formal parliamentary sittings, emphasising that everyone should observe the applicable rules, and eventually prevailed.
