GA/R: Tensions rise in Dawa as farmlands are destroyed by private developer

Tensions are escalating in Dawa, a farming community in the Ningo-Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region, as residents protest the destruction of over 50 acres of farmland by a private developer, Dawa Industrial City.
The affected farmers, many of whom rely solely on agriculture for survival, say crops such as pepper, maize, and watermelon were destroyed during the development, resulting in losses they estimate to be worth thousands of cedis.
The destruction, they say, has pushed many families into financial hardship and food insecurity.
Adding to the community's frustrations, residents allege that soldiers have been deployed to intimidate and prevent them from accessing their farms, sparking further outrage.
The farmers also accused the Stool Father of the area, Asafoatse Kwetey Adelah V, of selling over 500 acres of land to the private investor without consulting the affected families or obtaining their consent.
“Our livelihoods have been wiped out overnight. These lands are the only source of income we have,” a distraught resident said. “Now, we are not even allowed to go near our farms without being chased away.”
In response to the accusations, Asafoatse Kwetey Adelah V confirmed that an agreement was indeed signed between himself and the developer.
However, he admitted that the company had violated aspects of their agreement, prompting legal action.
“The matter is currently in court,” he stated. “We are hopeful that the court will rule in favour of the community and compel the investor to compensate the affected farmers.”
As the dispute unfolds, residents are calling on the government and relevant authorities to intervene and protect their lands, livelihoods, and rights. Community leaders say the issue is not just about land, but about justice, survival, and respect for traditional ownership.
