Source of my wealth is clean: Afenyo-Markin to critics

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency in the Central Region, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has disclosed that his wealth comes from years of hard work in business, dismissing speculations about his financial background.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin revealed that he dropped out of school in his third year at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to pursue business opportunities, a decision that ultimately shaped his financial success.

The fourth-term MP recounted that after completing secondary school, he spent two years at home before moving to Accra to “hustle.”

He started as a Post Boy, worked his way up to become a Principal Post Officer, and later secured a scholarship to study at Cape Coast University in 1999.

“In July 2001, during the Kufuor administration, we had career counselling sessions that introduced us to entrepreneurship.

That was when I made the bold decision not to return to school. My colleagues know this – I left Cape-Vas at level 300 to chase money,” he explained.

Afenyo-Markin detailed how he built his business empire, owning a chain of companies across multiple industries.

He proudly stated that he bought his first Mercedes-Benz and BMW at a young age, which he still keeps in his yard as a testament to his achievements.

"I started my business early. At age 23, I got married and launched Excel Courier, a multi-million-dollar investment.

Standard Chartered Bank gave me a $5 million facility, Barclays Bank also supported me, and I made significant strides in business before entering public service,” he noted.

Beyond courier services, he revealed that he has been involved in logistics and transportation, working with companies such as Guinness and Diamond Cement.

“I own trucks and tankers that operate between Ghana, Togo, Aflao, Buipe, Ho, Ivory Coast, and Awaso,” he disclosed.

Amid accusations that he uses political vetting sessions to settle personal scores, Afenyo-Markin asserted that he has no need to hide his wealth.

"I am not one of those who buy property and register it in someone else's name.

I am a landlord, not a tenant, and I am proud of my journey as a businessman," he emphasized.

He spoke on Accra-based Joy News.
