There was uproar in Ghana’s Parliament when Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Muntaka, has reiterated that no Member of Parliament is above the law following the attempted arrest of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region.

On March 7, operatives from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) arrived at an undisclosed location in three official vehicles to execute the arrest, which Muntaka confirmed was sanctioned by a court order.

He urged the public not to interpret the incident as an abuse of power, emphasizing that the NIB acted within its legal mandate.

However, the attempted arrest has sparked controversy, particularly among Minority lawmakers, who have raised concerns about its implications for parliamentary immunity and the treatment of elected officials.
