The Volta Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a statement condemning the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority for their persistent opposition to the appointment of Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiamah as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

The NDC describes the NPP's actions as a "desperate political witch-hunt" that has ultimately "collapsed in disgrace."

According to the NDC's statement, the NPP pursued unfounded allegations against Dr. Asiamah for seven years, accusing him of wrongdoing related to the BoG's decision to provide liquidity support to certain banks—a decision approved by the BoG's board.

The NDC emphasizes that the NPP government subjected Dr. Asiamah to a prolonged legal ordeal, which not only curtailed his freedom but also imposed significant financial burdens upon him.

Despite these efforts, the NPP failed to substantiate any violations of the Bank of Ghana Act or prove that Dr. Asiamah caused financial loss to the state.

The statement further asserts that the charges against Dr. Asiamah were malicious and aimed at silencing him, noting that similar liquidity support decisions had been made by past governors without such repercussions.

The NDC contends that Dr. Asiamah was unjustly singled out for political reasons, particularly because he defended legitimate financial decisions made under the previous NDC government.

His recent exoneration from all allegations is hailed as a well-deserved vindication.

The NDC also criticizes the NPP's historical treatment of individuals from the Volta Region, stating that the era of using Voltarians as scapegoats for political tactics is over.

The party expresses solidarity with Dr. Asiamah and all individuals from the region, affirming that they will not tolerate further injustices against their people.

In response to concerns about potential victimization within the BoG, the NDC assures individuals, including Dr. Gideon Boako’s wife, who is employed at the BoG, that the NDC operates based on moral values and principles, eschewing unnecessary political persecution.

The statement concludes by urging Dr. Asiamah to remain focused and undistracted by the opposition's criticisms.

The NDC expresses confidence that he will excel in his new role, contributing to the restoration of financial stability in Ghana.

Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiamah was nominated by President John Dramani Mahama to serve as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, pending approval by the Council of State.

He officially assumed office on February 3, 2025.
