Co-Chair of the Citizens Movement Against Corruption (CMaC), Edem Senanu, has expressed worry over the rising wave of petitions seeking the dismissal of leaders of key state bodies, cautioning that the development could deter competent professionals from accepting such roles.

His remarks come in the wake of three petitions demanding the removal of the Special Prosecutor, with petitioners arguing that his continued tenure undermines accountability and good governance.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, December 2, Mr. Senanu said the growing appetite for ousting heads of state agencies—particularly those mandated to operate independently, poses a significant threat to institutional stability.

He stressed that constantly calling for the dismissal of such officials weakens the country’s governance framework.
“We cannot continue on this path where demands for the removal of heads of independent bodies become routine,” he said.

Mr. Senanu warned that if the trend persists, fewer qualified people will be willing to serve in these positions.
“Eventually, many capable individuals will shy away from taking up these offices because they may end up spending most of their tenure responding to petitions,” he added.

He also rejected suggestions that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) should be scrapped, arguing that the institution remains essential in holding politically connected individuals accountable.
“Considering the challenges they face and the work they do, the OSP is vital in ensuring accountability among politically exposed persons,” he noted.

So far, three separate petitions have been submitted to President John Dramani Mahama calling for action against the Special Prosecutor.
