We feel no sympathy for Hawa Koomson after Ablekuma North incident- Koomson

Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Mr. Abraham Koomson, has stated that he feels no sympathy for former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, following her assault during the parliamentary re-run in the Ablekuma North constituency of the Greater Accra Region.
Mr. Koomson condemned the violent disturbances that disrupted voting across 19 polling stations.
However, he was blunt in his assessment of the former Fisheries Minister’s role in the chaos.
“Why would anyone go to a polling station with pepper spray? What were you expecting to happen there?” Mr. Koomson questioned.
He added, “We’ve seen her role in previous incidents.
Has she ever shown remorse for those actions?”
His remarks referenced the controversial 2020 voter registration incident, during which Hawa Koomson admitted to firing a gun at a registration centre, citing self-defense.
That episode drew widespread criticism and has remained a point of contention in public discourse.
During the July 2025 re-run, tensions flared at several polling centres in Ablekuma North.
Eyewitnesses reported that a group of men arrived at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station in a pick-up truck and on motorbikes, causing panic among voters and election officials.
Despite a significant police presence, incidents of impersonation, vote-buying, and violence were recorded. Viral videos from the scene captured Hawa Koomson deploying pepper spray during a scuffle before being overpowered by an irate crowd.
Reacting to the footage, Mr. Koomson maintained his condemnation of electoral violence but insisted that past actors must be held accountable for their actions.
“We should not condone violence under any circumstances,” he said.
“But those who have once promoted or benefited from such acts must also reflect on their actions. Maybe this is a moment of reckoning.”
He spoke on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme with host Nana Dogbe on Saturday, July 12, 2025.
