Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku calls for 'substitution' in NPP's 2028 flagbearer race
Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)and a member of the Dr Bryan Acheampong for President 2028, Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, has sparked fresh debate within the party by calling for a “substitution” in the race to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.
In a statement, Dr. Opoku suggested that if the party previously allowed an “overtaking” in the selection of its 2024 flagbearer, then a “substitution” should now be considered a legitimate remedy following what he described as a “painful defeat” of the overtaker.
His comments appear to reference the internal leadership dynamics of the party and the need for reflection after the NPP's loss in the 2024 general elections.
“If overtaking was allowed, then substitution is permissible,” Dr. Opoku argued, suggesting that the party must now be bold in correcting past missteps to reposition itself for electoral success in 2028.
His remarks have reignited conversations about leadership succession within the NPP and the potential reshuffling of key contenders as the party begins preparing for the next electoral cycle.
While Dr. Opoku did not mention any specific names, his statement is being widely interpreted as a call for a strategic leadership change as part of the party’s rebuilding efforts.
