Why apologise on my behalf when I didn’t disrespect Speaker? – Kwaku Afriyie to Annoh-Dompreh

Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso Constituency in the Western Region, has publicly rejected an apology issued on his behalf by the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, after his expulsion from the chamber by Speaker Alban Bagbin over some disagreement on the president’s appointment of two Supreme Court judges.

Speaker Bagbin had encouraged the House to consider the broader context of the Supreme Court's full complement when the Appointments Committee presents its report.

Dr. Afriyie voiced his disagreement with the Speaker's comments, asserting that it was not within Bagbin’s authority to make such statements.

This disagreement prompted Speaker Bagbin to expel Dr. Afriyie from the House, labelling his remarks as “rude” and “disrespectful.”

In response, Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh apologised to the Speaker on behalf of the caucus.

However, Dr. Afriyie, in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, denied any wrongdoing and clarified that he had not authorized Mr Annoh-Dompreh to apologize on his behalf.

“He apologised on my behalf? Well, he doesn’t have my permission to do that, and this one you can put on record.

“We’ll take it everywhere. I haven’t done anything wrong, so why should I apologise? I haven’t insulted the Speaker, I haven’t disrespected him. Where’s the disrespect?” he questioned.

Dr. Afriyie insisted that his comments were neither insulting nor disrespectful and did not warrant an apology
