Ghana hosts key ITU meeting, pushes for stronger African digital voice
Ghana is hosting the first African preparatory meeting for the World Telecommunications Standardization Assembly 2028 (WTSA 28), emphasizing the need for a united African position in global digital standardization.
Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, urged participants to actively contribute to shaping Africa's digital future, focusing on bridging the digital divide, enhancing cybersecurity, and promoting affordable connectivity.
Ghana is seeking support for re-election to the ITU Council and the ATU Council, and for the reappointment of Reverend Engineer Edmond Uechi-Fianco to the ITU's Radio Regulations Board.
National Communication Authority(NCA) Director-General, Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, highlighted Ghana's commitment to standardization, interoperability, and regional collaboration, showcasing the country's investments in conformance laboratories and training programs.
Seizo Onoe, Director of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), has highlighted the importance of Africa's participation in global digital standardization, emphasizing the continent's growing economies and ITU's strong African representation.
Onoe praised Ghana's leadership in hosting the regional GEP meeting for WTSA 2028 and urged African countries to play an influential role in deciding the outcomes, ensuring the ITU's standards and capacity building support the continent's digital development.
The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Secretary General, Mr. John Omo, has emphasized the need for Africa to take a unified stance in global digital standardization, highlighting the continent's pressing issues with connectivity, affordability, and quality of service.
Speaking at the first global preparatory meeting for WTSA 28 in Accra, Omo stressed that Africa's digital future depends on the continent's ability to build strong common positions and engage in international standardization discussions, focusing on OTT services, emergency communications, and AI.
