MTN’s classification as SMP not intended to punish them – NCA

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has responded to growing public concerns about high internet data prices and its recent designation of MTN as a Significant Market Power (SMP).
In a statement released on Sunday, 21 July 2024, the NCA sought to clarify its position and the implications of the SMP classification.
According to the NCA, designating MTN as an SMP is in line with its mission and regulatory mandate.
“The classification of MTN as an SMP aligns with our mission and fulfills our mandate,” the statement noted.
The NCA emphasised that this designation is not intended to “punish or stifle MTN’s operations” but rather to ensure a fair and competitive market environment.
The NCA reassured the public that the SMP status aims to foster a level playing field and safeguard consumer choice.
“We want to ensure that the market remains competitive and that consumers have access to a range of choices,” the statement continued.
It assured the public that it will “continue to work closely with all relevant stakeholders to ensure reliable internet access.”
