MoH rolls out new digital system after NHIS platform breakdown
The Ministry of Health(MoH) will roll out a new Ghana Health Information Management System (GHIMS) in November 2025, following major disruptions that crippled health insurance verification and billing services in public hospitals.
According to a directive dated October 28, the move comes after the collapse of the old system managed by Lightwave Health Information Management System Limited, which left several hospitals unable to process patient records and NHIS claims.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh told Parliament that despite the government fulfilling much of its financial commitment, the contractor failed to meet key obligations, exposing the dangers of outsourcing critical health data systems.
The new government-managed GHIMS platform will handle patient registration, clinical records, billing, NHIS verification, and claims processing.
The Ministry has appointed Desmond Baateng as National Rollout Lead and Axon Information Systems as the implementing partner.
Facilities have been directed to fully cooperate with deployment teams and ensure staff readiness for training. GHIMS will now serve as the sole authorised platform for managing patient information and insurance services nationwide.
