NPA sets up committees to drive EV charging and battery-swapping framework

The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, has inaugurated a set of committees tasked with developing a framework for the rollout of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points and battery-swapping facilities at petroleum retail outlets nationwide.
The newly established regulatory, standards, and stakeholder sub-committees will be chaired by Deputy Chief Executives Dr. Sheila Addo and Dr. Dramani Bukari, with Directors and Heads of Department serving as members.
They are expected to submit their recommendations to a Steering Committee, chaired by Mr. Tameklo, within three months.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Accra on Wednesday, the NPA Chief Executive described the initiative as a bold step towards ensuring Ghana’s readiness for the global shift to sustainable energy.
“A lot is happening. We don’t want to be found wanting. We want to approach the future today,” Mr. Tameklo said.
He explained that the committees would design a roadmap that addresses infrastructure needs, safety standards, accessibility, and incentives to make EV charging points a viable feature at traditional fuel stations.
According to him, the move aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for a green transition, the Energy Ministry’s agenda, and Ghana’s broader commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction.
“This roadmap will encourage investment, improve convenience, and ensure petroleum retail outlets continue to serve customers in an evolving energy landscape,” he noted.
Mr. Tameklo further urged members to embrace collaboration, innovation, and practical thinking in delivering an actionable framework that would accelerate the country’s shift to electric mobility.
“The committees’ role is vital in shaping a practical and efficient framework that supports the growth of electric transportation in Ghana,” he emphasised.
