President Mahama outlines digital road toll collection system at 2025 Ghana CEOs’ Summit

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans for a modernised, digitised road toll system as part of the government’s 2025 Economic Policy and Budget Statement, aimed at enhancing revenue collection and streamlining toll operations across the country.
Speaking at the 2025 Ghana CEOs’ Summit in Accra on Monday, President Mahama said the proposed system would eliminate the need for traditional toll booths by leveraging digital technology and Ghana Card integration.
Under the proposed system, every vehicle would be linked to its owner’s Ghana Card.
As vehicles pass through toll points, automated cameras would capture their license plates and instantly bill the owner a fixed amount, currently pegged at GH¢1.00.
The bill would then be deducted directly from the owner’s mobile money wallet or bank account.
“We don’t need to go back to the old toll booths with attendants lifting barriers,” President Mahama explained.
“With this new digital system, if you cross a toll point, say the East Legon Bridge, a picture of your car will be taken and a GH¢1.00 bill will be sent straight to your mobile money or bank account.”
The move, according to the President, is part of broader discussions to modernise revenue collection and improve efficiency in road infrastructure funding.
This year’s CEOs’ Summit, held under the theme “Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset: Transforming Business and Governance for a Sustainable Futuristic Economy – A Private-Public Sector CEO Dialogue & High-Impact Learning,” brought together top business leaders, policymakers, and economic stakeholders for strategic dialogue.
President Mahama praised the Summit as a crucial platform for shaping Ghana’s economic direction, commending it for fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors.
Founder and CEO of the Ghana CEOs’ Summit, Ernest De-Graft Egyir, also reiterated the Summit’s critical role in influencing policy and business transformation, emphasising the need for continued innovation and partnership in building a resilient and forward-looking economy.
