Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Yussif has assured Parliament of complete transparency regarding the expenditures for the 2023 African Games.
During a parliamentary session, the sports minister emphasised that the government's spending adhered to the allocated budget for the event.
The government allocated approximately USD230 million for the three-week games held in Accra.
Addressing the Minority caucus's concerns, Mr. Yussif reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to transparency.
"Every Cedi used for the games is going to be accounted for, and I just want you to know that every penny is going to be accounted for, be rest assured," he affirmed.
In addition to addressing financial accountability, the Sports Minister criticised the Minority for not recognising the accomplishments of Ghana's athletes.
“You should rather be congratulating Team Ghana, because so far, we have not seen the Minority issuing any statement congratulating the sportsmen and women who fought very hard in lifting the flag of our country very high. And neither has the leadership of the Minority issued any statement,” the Sports Minister lamented.
Ghana hosted the 13th African Games from 8–23 March 2024 and finished sixth on the medal table with 19 gold medals, 29 silver and 21 bronze medals.
