André Ayew hails Black Queens for stellar WAFCON performance

Former Black Stars captain André Ayew has heaped praise on the Black Queens for their impressive performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they clinched a historic bronze medal.
Ayew, who led Ghana to U-20 World Cup glory in 2009, commended the team during a dinner hosted in their honour by Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on Tuesday.
He described the squad’s achievement as inspirational and a proud moment for the nation.
“Ghanaians really love football, but what you’ve achieved goes beyond just the sport; you’ve made a name for yourselves,” Ayew told the team.
“I didn’t know some of you before, but now I see how great you all are.
This is just the beginning.”
The Black Queens returned home on Monday, July 28, to a heroine’s welcome following their third-place finish — their first podium spot at WAFCON since 2016.
Ghana secured the bronze medal after edging South Africa 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time during the third-place playoff.
