Body of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun repatriated for burial after tragic death in Ghana

The body of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun, who tragically died in March this year during a boxing bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, has been repatriated to Nigeria for burial.
Oluwasegun, who collapsed in the ring during a professional fight, was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead.
His untimely death shocked the boxing fraternity across West Africa and sparked calls for improved medical protocols and safety standards at boxing events.
After months of coordination between Ghanaian and Nigerian authorities, as well as the involvement of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), the Nigerian High Commission in Ghana, and the deceased boxer’s family, the necessary arrangements were completed to return his remains to Nigeria for a dignified burial.
Gabriel Oluwasegun was regarded as a promising athlete in the regional boxing scene.
His death has been described as a major loss to Nigerian sports.
Officials say an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is still ongoing, with recommendations expected to strengthen medical supervision and emergency preparedness at future boxing events in the country.
The Ghana Boxing Authority has since pledged to tighten safety measures at all sanctioned bouts to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
