Charles Osei Asibey files nomination to contest AFA Presidency
Vice President of the World Armwrestling Federation, Charles Osei Asibey, has officially filed his nomination to contest for the presidency of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA).
Mr. Asibey, who currently serves as President of the AFA and the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, as well as Secretary-General of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), announced his decision in a statement released on Monday.
He said his decision to seek re-election is rooted in his belief that African armwrestling stands at a critical juncture, requiring consistent and experienced leadership to consolidate recent gains and drive further reforms.
According to him, his four years and seven months at the helm of the continental body have provided valuable insight into both the opportunities and challenges facing the sport in Africa.
Mr. Asibey highlighted achievements under his leadership, including improvements in governance systems, an increase in active member federations, expansion of continental competitions, and strengthened representation of Africa within the global armwrestling community.
Despite these strides, he acknowledged that more work remains to be done, particularly in deepening institutional reforms, strengthening compliance standards, and ensuring structured development support for all member federations.
He outlined key priorities for his next term, including strengthening governance and institutional structures, expanding competitive platforms, promoting grassroots and youth development, increasing women’s participation and inclusion, mobilising strategic partnerships and sponsorships, and enhancing capacity building for member federations.
Mr. Asibey called on Ghanaians to continue supporting his continental vision, noting that their backing has played a crucial role in his leadership journey.
He also appealed to the armwrestling fraternity and stakeholders across Africa to unite behind a shared agenda focused on growth, integrity, and excellence.
He expressed confidence that with collective effort, Africa can build a stronger, more unified, and globally competitive armwrestling movement.
