The Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has pledged to donate three months of his salary to support the newly established Ghana Sports Fund, a dedicated financing mechanism aimed at strengthening sports development across the country.

The fund, which was passed into law earlier this year, is structured as a multi-source sports development fund to provide sustainable backing for athlete welfare, infrastructure upgrades, grassroots programmes, and systematic talent identification.

Announcing the pledge on the floor of Parliament, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga conveyed the Chief Whip’s commitment.

“The Chief Whip has asked me to announce that he is committing three months of his salary [to the Ghana Sports Fund],” he said on Thursday.

Dafeamekpor’s contribution follows an earlier donation by National Investment Bank (NIB), which made the first corporate contribution to the fund, signalling institutional backing for the initiative.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has also committed two months of his salary to the fund. Speaking in Parliament, the minister described the gesture as a personal effort to help rebuild Ghana’s sporting ecosystem and to lead by example.

He urged corporate organisations, sports administrators and private individuals to contribute to the initiative, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in revitalising the sector.

The Buem Constituency lawmaker characterised the fund as a timely intervention that could transform Ghana’s sports landscape by ensuring predictable and sustainable financing for athletes, associations and development programmes.

Government officials say the new framework is intended to channel resources into grassroots talent development, improve sports infrastructure, enhance training and preparation, and promote excellence across multiple disciplines.

The passage of the bill marks a policy shift aimed at addressing persistent funding shortfalls that have long constrained sports development, with authorities hopeful the fund will provide a stable, transparent and reliable source of support nationwide.
