Egypt throw away 2-goal lead as Argentina complete dramatic comeback to reach WC quarter-finals
Egypt's FIFA World Cup campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion after surrendering a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to defending champions Argentina in the Round of 16 on Tuesday.
The Pharaohs looked on course for one of the biggest victories in their history after taking a 2-0 lead, but Argentina mounted a remarkable late comeback to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Cristian Romero pulled a goal back in the 79th minute before Lionel Messi equalised four minutes later. Enzo Fernández then completed the turnaround with a stoppage-time winner to seal a dramatic victory for the reigning world champions.
The match was also overshadowed by controversy after Egypt had a second goal ruled out following a VAR review for a foul in the build-up, a decision that sparked strong protests from the Egyptian players and coaching staff.
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan criticised the officiating after the match, describing the decision as an injustice, while the VAR intervention became a major talking point following the final whistle.
