Fenerbahce sacks Jose Mourinho after Champions League exit

Jose Mourinho has been dismissed as head coach of Fenerbahce following the club’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, bringing his tenure to an abrupt end just over a year after his arrival in Turkey.
The club confirmed the decision in a statement on Friday morning, thanking the Portuguese manager for his service.
“Our Professional Football First Team’s technical director, Jose Mourinho, who has been carrying out his duties since the 2024/25 season, has parted ways with us.
We thank him for his efforts and wish him success in his future career,” the statement read.
The dismissal came in the wake of Fenerbahce’s 1-0 defeat to Benfica on Wednesday night in their Champions League play-off clash, a result that denied them a place in the group stage of Europe’s premier competition.
The loss was described as the decisive factor in the club’s decision to terminate his contract.
Mourinho, who has previously managed elite clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Tottenham Hotspur, joined Fenerbahce in the summer of 2024 amid high expectations.
However, his spell ended without delivering the anticipated success on the European stage.
His sacking follows another high-profile managerial exit in Turkey.
Just hours earlier, Besiktas dismissed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the club’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Conference League.
Mourinho’s departure adds another chapter to his turbulent managerial journey, as Fenerbahce now face the challenge of finding a new coach to lead their campaign forward.
