Ghana's paralympic team absconds upon arrival in Norway
A team of Paralympic athletes from Ghana has gone missing after failing to participate in the Fjordkraft Bergen Marathon in Oslo, Norway.
According to a letter dated July 3 from the Ministry of National Security addressed to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, an 11-member team representing Ghana arrived in Oslo on April 25, 2024, to compete in the marathon. However, they did not show up for the event.
Following their non-appearance, a search was initiated.
Nana Antwi, a para-athlete and member of the team, was apprehended while attempting to travel from Norway to Sweden by train.
In a tragic turn of events, the team's head coach, George Gyasi Gyamfi, was admitted to Oslo University Hospital after collapsing on April 28, 2024. He sadly passed away on May 17, 2024.
The letter did not provide information on the whereabouts of the remaining nine team members.
However, it stated that the European Border Control Coast Guard Agency and the Norwegian Embassy in Accra, Ghana, have been informed and are working to locate them.
