'Greatest sporting event in history': US State Department assures, welcomes global fans ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026
The United States Department of State has reaffirmed the country's readiness to host millions of football fans from around the world ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
In a post shared on X on June 9, the department said the United States was excited to welcome international visitors for the tournament, which will coincide with the country's 250th anniversary celebrations.
"The United States is excited to welcome fans from around the world for the FIFA World Cup 2026. Coinciding with America's 250th birthday, President Trump is committed to making this the greatest sporting event in world history," the post stated.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Promising 104 exciting matches, it will be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, and is expected to attract millions of supporters from across the globe.
The United States will host the majority of the tournament's matches, including the final, with games scheduled to take place in several major cities across the country.
The tournament is also expected to coincide with nationwide activities marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, creating what US officials describe as a unique opportunity to showcase the country to an international audience.
The State Department's message forms part of broader preparations by the US government as it gets ready to receive visitors, participating teams and officials for one of the world's largest sporting events.
US embassies worldwide estimate that between five and seven million international visitors will arrive in the country over the next month. Federal estimates project that the tournament, combined with the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, will generate upwards of $40.9 billion in direct economic output and significantly contribute to national GDP.
