Mahama urges Black Stars to aim for glory at 2026 World Cup

President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated the Black Stars on qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging the team to make history by surpassing Africa’s previous best performances on football’s biggest stage.
Ghana’s senior national team booked their World Cup ticket with a 1–0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium, thanks to a decisive strike from Mohammed Kudus.
Speaking on the qualification, Mahama commended the players and technical team for their determination, while calling on the nation to rally behind them as they prepare for the tournament.
“We must all rally behind the Black Stars. Let’s support them fully — without partisanship or ethnic bias.
The team represents Ghana and Africa,” he said.
Reflecting on Ghana’s dramatic 2010 World Cup campaign — where a missed penalty by Asamoah Gyan denied the country a place in the semi-finals — Mahama said the current generation must use that memory as motivation.
He also pointed to Morocco’s historic run to the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as proof that African teams can compete with the world’s best.
“We must follow in Morocco’s footsteps by going beyond the semi-finals and, who knows, with fingers crossed, bringing the World Cup trophy home to make Ghana and Africa proud,” Mahama added.
The Black Stars will learn their group-stage opponents during the World Cup draw scheduled for December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
After a disappointing group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup, Ghana is determined to make a deeper run at the 2026 edition, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
