Supporters praise George Mireku Duker’s sports development legacy in Tarkwa-Nsuaem
Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth and Graduate Team Duker have praised former Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Hon. George Mireku Duker, for what they describe as a strong record of investment in sports development during his tenure from 2017 to 2025.
According to the group, Hon. Duker played a key role in strengthening sports infrastructure and supporting local football clubs, particularly Medeama Sporting Club, through financial assistance, sponsorship facilitation, and logistical support.
Among the interventions cited was a GHS50,000 donation to Medeama SC during the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season.
The group also highlighted his facilitation of a US$300,000 sponsorship package from Nguvu Mining to support the club’s participation in the 2022/23 CAF Champions League, as well as a US$150,000 seasonal sponsorship from Gold Fields Ghana.
They further noted his lobbying efforts that contributed to the proposed construction of a US$16 million Tarkwa Stadium aimed at boosting sports development and nurturing local talent in the area.
Additional contributions attributed to him include the establishment of a support fund for the acquisition of a team bus for Medeama SC and sponsorship for four Tarkwa-based sports journalists to cover the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The group argues that these initiatives helped position Tarkwa-Nsuaem as an emerging hub for sports development and youth engagement.
However, they expressed concern that since the change in parliamentary leadership, there has been limited visible support for sports development in the constituency.
They noted that with preparations underway for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, no comparable initiatives have been observed to support local sports journalists or strengthen sports development programmes.
Despite the contrast drawn, observers say the claims reflect ongoing political debate over sports development priorities in the constituency.
Hon. Duker’s supporters maintain that his record remains one of the most impactful in advancing sports and youth empowerment in Tarkwa-Nsuaem in recent years.
