Union Ghana faces College of Humanities in UG Corporate Football League opener

The highly anticipated University of Ghana Corporate Football League kicks off this Friday, February 21, 2025, with defending champions Union Ghana set to take on the College of Humanities in a thrilling opening encounter at the UG Sports Stadium.
This fixture marks the start of an intense 20-week tournament where 18 corporate and institutional teams will battle for supremacy. The league, which brings together professionals from diverse sectors, aims to foster teamwork, networking, and corporate engagement through football.
Official launch and team balloting
The official launch and balloting ceremony took place earlier today at the VIP Lounge of the UG Sports Stadium. The event saw the unveiling of the tournament structure, match fixtures, and team placements.
The 18 participating teams have been grouped as follows:

* Ghana National Petroleum Corporation
* College of Health Sciences
* College of Basic and Applied Sciences
* College of Education
* Telecel Ghana

Group B

* Bui Power Authority
* National Petroleum Authority
* Central Administration
* Zenith Bank
* Ghana Civil Aviation Authority
* Lancaster Accra
* Forestry Commission
A total of five matches will be played on the opening day. The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), will take on the University of Ghana in the curtain-raiser before Union Ghana face off against the College of Humanities. Other fixtures include Ghana National Petroleum Corporation vs Ghana Football Association, College of Health Sciences vs Telecel Ghana, and College of Basic & Applied Sciences vs College of Education.
Battle of champions
As the reigning champions of the UG Community Games Football Gala, Union Ghana enter the competition with high expectations. However, the College of Humanities, known for their tactical discipline and energetic play, will be keen to cause an early upset.
Speaking at the launch, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, Registrar of the University of Ghana, expressed delight in the league’s role in bridging the gap between academia and the corporate world.
The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, who graced the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour, lauded the initiative, stating: “This vision also aligns seamlessly with the Vice-Chancellor of UG’s commitment to bridging academia and the corporate world, and I salute the thinkers, the dreamers of this initiative and those who partnered and joined in bringing it to life. RITE Sports Services, we really thank you.”
As the tournament unfolds, teams will compete not only for the ultimate title but also to strengthen bonds within the corporate community. The UG Corporate Football League promises to be one of the most exciting sporting events of the year, showcasing a perfect blend of professional excellence and football passion.
