‘We can make exceptions for Guardiola’ – Italy open door for shock coaching move
Italy Football Federation (FIGC) President Giovanni Malagò has revealed that the financially challenged federation could make special salary arrangements to bring in Pep Guardiola as the next head coach of the Italian national team.
The comments come as Italy continues its search for a permanent replacement for Gennaro Gattuso with the four-time World Cup winners looking to rebuild after another disappointing World Cup qualification campaign.
The Azzurri have failed to reach football’s biggest tournament in three consecutive editions, missing out on the 2018, 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups with Bosnia and Herzegovina securing qualification at their expense for the latest edition.
Speaking on the Cronache di Spogliatoio Podcast, Malagò confirmed that Guardiola is among the high-profile options being considered by the FIGC while stressing that the federation is also holding discussions with other candidates including former Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo.
“This talks with Guardiola is by no means a lack of respect towards other candidates, with whom discussions have already begun,” Malagò said.
He admitted that financial restrictions remain a major challenge for the federation but suggested that extraordinary situations could require special measures.
“There are also financial and budgetary considerations. In the short to medium term, to say that we’ll have to tighten our belts is an understatement. However, some exceptions have been made,” he added.
When asked whether Pep Guardiola was one of the candidates who could fall under those exceptions, Malagò responded: “Yes.”
Guardiola, who recently ended his long spell as manager of Manchester City, has previous ties to the Italian football, having played in Serie A during his career with Brescia Calcio.
The possibility of Guardiola taking charge of Italy would represent a major statement from the FIGC as it attempts to restore the national team's status among world football’s elite after years of struggles on the international stage.
