Driving financial inclusion through innovation: UNDP's 3ic demo day spotlights future of inclusive insurance in Ghana

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the National Insurance Commission (NIC) of Ghana, successfully hosted the Inclusive Insurance Innovation Challenge (3IC) Demo Day, an inspiring showcase of next-generation, scalable insurance solutions aimed at expanding financial inclusion and resilience for underserved populations.
The event, organised under the UNDP's flagship Insurance and Risk Finance Facility (IRFF), brought together innovators, industry leaders, policymakers, and development stakeholders to spotlight transformative ideas redefining the future of insurance in Ghana.
The 3IC Demo Day served as the grand finale of a nationwide search for inclusive, affordable, and tech-driven insurance solutions targeting low-income, climate-vulnerable, and marginalised communities.
Ten high-potential finalists were selected from across Ghana to pitch their cutting-edge solutions.
Each concept was evaluated on its scalability, accessibility, and potential to close real insurance gaps across agriculture, health, and rural livelihoods.
"Today marks the pinnacle of a bold vision, to ignite a movement that transforms insurance from a privilege to a lifeline," said Rita Apau, Head of Insurtech and Innovation at NIC.
"This is more than a challenge.
It's a catalyst for systemic change, fuelled by innovation, grounded in inclusion."
Since 2022, UNDP Ghana's IRFF has been pioneering efforts to deepen insurance penetration, especially among underserved groups.
At the Demo Day, Dr. Amina Sammo reaffirmed UNDP's commitment to inclusive finance.
"Insurance is a powerful development enabler, not a luxury.
Through 3IC, we are spotlighting homegrown solutions that support the SDGs and build resilience from the ground up."
Three standout teams were recognised for their innovative contributions:
Agricom Assurance – Overall Winner: A groundbreaking digital insurance solution for smallholder farmers, offering protection against drought, floods, pests, and diseases.
The platform supports multiple Ghanaian languages, ensuring accessibility regardless of literacy level.
WellMax Inclusive Insurance – First Runner-Up: An ultra-affordable health and funeral insurance plan available for just GHS40 ($4.00) per year.
With a five-step mobile interface, WellMax delivers intuitive and rapid access to coverage.
IPAP Resolut – Second Runner-Up: A tiered, income-sensitive insurance platform offering personalised coverage options like the "Wo Daakye Boafo," "Anidaso," and "Banbo Pa" policies, designed to meet rural families where they are.
Beyond competition, the event spotlighted systemic capacity building. Sixteen (16) Inclusive Insurance Master Trainers from the Ghana Insurance College were formally graduated, having completed intensive training supported by UNDP-IRFF Ghana.
These trainers are now equipped to drive community-based awareness and delivery of inclusive insurance solutions across the country.
Commissioner of Insurance, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, celebrated the energy and ingenuity of young innovators. "The youth are not just the future, they are the now.
Their solutions reflect a new era of responsible leadership and purpose-driven insurance innovation."
As the curtains closed on 3IC Demo Day, the message was clear: innovation is key to inclusive growth. UNDP Ghana, in partnership with NIC and other stakeholders, remains steadfast in its mission to accelerate access to impactful insurance products that build resilience, protect livelihoods, and advance the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Inclusive Insurance Innovation Challenge (3IC) is a UNDP-led initiative under the Insurance and Risk Finance Facility (IRFF), designed to identify and scale innovative insurance solutions that increase financial protection and economic resilience for vulnerable populations.
