Ghana moves to realise Nkrumah's vision with new Aluminium Industry Committee
The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has taken steps towards realising a long-held national ambition by inaugurating a special committee to select investors for two landmark projects in Ghana’s industrial sector.
The Investor Selection Committee was officially inaugurated today by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, at a ceremony at the Ministry.
The committee is tasked with a critical mandate: to lead the process of identifying strategic partners for the modernisation of the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) and the development of Ghana’s first-ever alumina refinery.
This initiative is central to the government's plan of building a fully integrated aluminium industry within the country—a vision first articulated by Ghana's first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
“This vision for an integrated aluminium industry was first championed by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Today, we are building upon it through GIADEC’s leadership and the Ministry’s oversight,” Minister Buah stated during the ceremony.
The development of an alumina refinery is a pivotal missing link in Ghana's aluminium value chain.
It would enable the country to process its own bauxite into alumina, which is then smelted into aluminium at VALCO, thereby capturing full economic value from its natural resources.
The formation of this committee marks a concrete move by the government to transition these strategic projects from planning to implementation, potentially unlocking significant investment and industrial growth for Ghana.
